Nursing jobs

Nursing DOES have a unique body of knowledge and values, but all too often adopts the medical perspective over its own; most academic nurses these days don’t try very hard to inject new nurses with any values other than the medical model (Yes, there are exceptions!). In that sense, nursing can only ever be a ‘profession allied to medicine’, not a true profession in its own right.

Nursing does have controlled entry – most countries have a legally-enforced registration. This is beyond doubt, but of questionable value, to some degree, it’s a cheat – “Nursing is a profession because the law says it is”.

Nursing has a variable degree of autonomy, but for the most part (Yes, there are exceptions!), has very little real freedom; indeed, nursing management, with it’s ‘cost saving’ mentality, does its utmost to strangle any independent thought or action, for fear of expensive litigation; there are ‘protocols’ for everything, these days, and woe betide the nurse who dares to use initiative (Yes, there are exceptions!).

Nurse practitioners (etc.) usually take orders from docs and are accountable to them, because their specialties are branches of medicine. But in many areas, nurses are responsible for *nursing* and in that sense are (still) independent of doctors.

It is a shame – but historically beyond doubt, that nurses tend to give away the areas they are most expert in; physiotherapy and occupational therapy both grew out of a nursing role, respiratory therapy is going the same way. Stoma therapy is an area that utilizes many core nursing skills; how long before it breaks off to become a profession in its own right?

Perversely, wound management was, until recently, a medical responsibility, though nurses applied almost 100% of dressings. Now, specialist nurses are teaching others the principles of wound care.

In many countries, Nursing does have its own disciplinary system – but in many of them, this is being eroded in favour of making nurses “accountable to the public” – understandable, but reflecting a view that nurses “cannot be trusted” to deal with there own problems – this is a diminution of professional respect and value.

Nurses are recognized as ‘nice’, ‘deserving better’ and ’sexy’ – the jury is out on whether any of those assist in the definition of ‘professional’.

External recognition is vital, just as the legal side is ’so what’ – few people would ever argue with doctor and lawyers as ‘true’ professionals; when the ‘Church was one, united, catholic church’, priests were similarly respected – I’m not so sure that’s generally true any more; individual clergymen are respected by individuals, and by their own community; as are individual nurses. But both fall shy of general respect to the level required, sadly. (Though both are streets ahead of journalists, real estate agents and heating engineers!).

To conclude, part of the problem is the poor self respect of nursing; just twenty years ago, the Process of Nursing, care plans and nursing diagnosis looked set to sweep in an era of nursing confidence and a bright, professional future.

Typing jobs

If you are a typist with time on your hands and if you are eager to bring yourself some added cash, then you might want to find internet typing jobs. What are internet typing jobs? These are typing jobs that are posted on the internet.

One way to find a list of the websites that carry such jobs is to go to ask.com. If you do that, then you might soon find yourself visiting the website freewebs.com. That particular website indicates that there is a real demand for typists who will take on the various internet typing jobs. The following paragraphs provide details on some of those jobs.

If you have ever been stopped by someone in the mall or if you have been asked to take a telephone survey then you are familiar with one important internet typing job. You are also familiar with the basic method for market research. Companies depend on market research to learn what the consumer wants. The volume of information obtained from such research needs to be typed into a report. Some internet writing jobs call for a typist who knows how to type up such reports.

Once companies determine what interests their customers, then they want to communicate with their customers. Many companies do that by using newsletters sent to each customer's e-mail address. The companies seldom ask a company secretary to type up such newsletters. They tend to enter their request for a newsletter typist among the many posted internet writing jobs.

The list of internet typing jobs goes on and on. Some companies need a typist to help with the printing of ads. Some companies desire typists who will supply them with well-typed welcome e-mails. These are sent to those customers who sign up for the company's newsletter. Other companies seem more interested in finding someone to type up information lists.

Information lists are not the only sort of list that company administrators want to see. Such administrators also want access to mailing lists, i.e. the list of customers who are receiving either the company newsletter or the company catalogue. Sometimes the administrators want a list of ordered items. Typed lists of software orders are a frequent need among company administrators.

Typed lists of any kind supply the company administrators with valuable information. While the customers are studying the company website to obtain information about the company's products, the company administrators are studying the many typed lists. If the available lists fail to supply the necessary information, then those administrators are apt to seek funds for more internet typing jobs.

Sales Executive Job

What does a Sales Executive do?
A Sales Executive looks for advertising sales opportunities directly with clients, advertising agencies and non-TV advertisers. Along with maintaining schedules and schedule performance, a Sales Executive must add value to a client's schedule through environmental placements and programme sponsorships. Driving advertising sales, maintaining year on year spend and looking for incremental growth are all key parts of the role.

What I like about being a Sales Executive -

"There is room in my position to be pro-active – in utilizing the strengths of television for broad audience reach, and the emotive impact of clients' messages" Andrew Horan, Sales Executive.

What qualifications do I need to become a Sales Executive?

A tertiary qualification in Advertising or Communications is very beneficial. However to be a successful Sales Executive you must have initiative, be able to think 'outside the square' and enjoy working with people within a fast paced, competitive environment. An understanding of television as a medium and how it relates to other mediums is also an advantage.

Data Entry Jobs

Data entry and information processing workers enter data into a computer, operate a variety of office machines, and perform other clerical or administrative duties. Data entry and information processing workers also are known as word processors, typists, and data entry keyers, or, less commonly, electronic data processors, keypunch technicians, and transcribers. Word processors and typists set up and prepare reports, letters, mailing labels, and other text material. Some may work with highly technical material, plan and key complicated statistical tables, combine and rearrange materials from different sources, or prepare master copies. Data entry keyers input lists of items, numbers, or other data, e.g., customers' personal information, medical records, or membership lists, into computers or complete forms that appear on a computer screen. They also may reformat existing data, edit current information, or proofread new entries for accuracy. Data entry keyers may use scanners, electronically transmitted files, or other forms of character recognition systems. Generally, these employees work standard workdays, but technology allows many to work from remote locations, including home, or during off hours when processing demands are less.

Many data entry and information processing workers are hired right out of high school and trained on the job. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills are important, as is familiarity with standard office equipment and procedures. Students may acquire skills in keyboarding and in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and database management software in high schools, community colleges, business schools, temporary help agencies, or using self-teaching aids such as books, tapes, and Internet tutorials.

Nanny/Housekeeping jobs

Nannies care for children in the homes of the children. They tend to all the needs of their charges. They shop for healthful foods and plan and cook tasty, nutritious meals. Nannies see that the breakfasts and lunches they serve are not only well-balanced, but also appealing to the children. Many Nannies keep a file of recipes the children like. They make sure meals are attractive. At mealtime, they teach table manners. Nannies wash the children's breakfast and lunch dishes, and clean up the kitchen or dining room. When caring for infants, Nannies prepare formula and sterilize bottles. As a rule, nannies do not cook for the family, but some do start dinner preparations.

Nannies wash, iron, and mend the children's clothing. They help older children learn to choose outfits right for the occasion. They teach the youngsters to keep closets and drawers neat. Nannies do not do family laundry.

Supervising toddlers during bath time is another duty of Nannies. So is bathing babies and changing their diapers. Nannies help with hair combing, shoe-tying, and homework. They put Band-Aids on scrape knees and take care of sick children. They follow the physician’s instructions in giving medicine.

Planning safe amusement, both indoors and out, is a large part of the work of Nannies. They devise games and play suitable for the ages of their charges. They closely monitor television viewing. They help youngsters learn to play alone and teach them how to get along with others. They may plan and oversee birthday parties and other social events. All Nannies read to their children; some sing. They give infants the rocking and cuddling so vital to normal growth. They soothe the hurt feelings of older children. They make children feel secure while their parents are away from home.

Nannies do not do general housework. They do pick up after the children. They teach their charges to take care of their own belongings. They discipline the children in ways that follow the wishes of the parents. Nannies drive the children to lessons or to appointments. They may also take over car pool duties. Sometimes Nannies run errands.

IT Jobs

Computer Software is always a solution to a problem

Mathematics is not always a solution to a problem, nor is speech. Therefore, the type of computer software is logically of the same class as a pump or bridge. It is not strictly speaking a tool like a screwdriver because one of those needs a human to define its usefulness, whereas a pump pumps water without needing to define a human - similarly a bridge provides passage. A pump, bridge and computer software can all be fully defined without defining a human - though the tasks they carry out may involve defining a human.
Therefore, computer software is a self-standing solution to a specific problem.
The primary function of all life is to solve problems

Plenty more about this in The Web Of Life by Fritjof Capra, but from the bacterium to a human, all life spends almost all of its time solving problems. The difference between a pump and a bacterium is that the latter is (like all life) capable of an inventive step ie; finding a new improved solution to a problem. A pump cannot exceed the boundaries of its design.
Therefore, life can be defined as anything capable of finding a new improved solution to a problem. This implies that there is cognition in all life (c.f. Margulis, Maturana)

Evolution is aggregating self-standing solutions to a specific problem

A multi-celled bacterium is a conglomeration of bacteria performing less complex solutions to problems. Even within each bacterium, the symbiotic providers of power are actually even simpler (and much more ancient) bacteria with their own separate genetic code - the mitochondria. Looking at humans, from the invention of fire to the bow & arrow, something non-genetic has enabled the genetically identical homo sapien of 50,000 years ago to do things well beyond previous generations. There are many non-genetic forms of evolution eg; cultural, lingual but one of the most important is improved tools and how to use them.
Therefore, technology (tool usage) is one of the kinds of non-genetic evolution (see Gregory Bateson's Mind and Nature for a description of the multiple forms of evolution).

The success of an organism is measured by its capacity to evolve/adapt

On this scale, bacteria are by far the most successful organism. We humans come down the line quite some way. Again, see The Web Of Life for proof of this.
Therefore, to be most successful, we should maximize our evolution in all non-genetic areas available, a major one of which being technology.

Computer software is an ecosystem
This may raise some eyebrows - however an ecosystem is any complex chaotic system with a great deal of inter-dependence both within itself and upon external entities - thus the Canadian economy is an ecosystem as itself plus within the US economy which is another ecosystem. Obviously, the planet is also an ecosystem - so is the universe.
Therefore, many of the properties of ecosystems also apply to computer software.

Evolution within an ecosystem is best served by frequent step-change innovation
We call step-change innovation difference between species and as is obvious, it doesn't happen too often. However incremental innovation happens much more frequently - thus a man living on top of a mountain has improved lung capacity - see Bateson's Mind and Nature.

Computer software is an ecosystem which also has step-change and incremental innovation. Therefore to maximize the potential of software (and via this, the human species) we should strongly encourage step-change innovation.
